Organic Products and Health

Organic Cultivation is a method which minimizes or even better completely avoids the use of synthetic fertilizers and weedkillers, as well as hormones. The organic food producers are based on the rotation[ alternation of plants for the harvest], the remains of the harvest, the fallow, the manure, and the mechanical agriculture for the preservation of the productivity of the soil and its enrichment with nutritional substances for the plants as well as the control of the weed, insects and parasites. The organic products contain 20-30% less water in their composition, greater amounts of proteins, mineral salts, enzymes and vitamins. Also, they do not contain any conservatives, taste amendments, artificial colours or fragrances. Last but not least, as it is widely accepted, the organic food has got a splendid taste.

NUTRITIONAL SUBSTANCES OF THE ORGANIC FOOD

Some research, having been conducted the very last years, has shown that the organic products furnish our health and contain more nutritional substances against serious infections. It has been proved that the organic oranges contain greater amounts of vitamin C and trace elements of iron, copper and zinc, as well as metabolism elements which are considered to offer protection against cancer and heart diseases.
The effects have, by far, been so evident that the organic products enable the increase in the levels of nutritional substances even to people who do not consume more than 5 proportions of fruit and vegetables, as it is proposed to do.
Moreover, the elements of minerals salts are higher in amount too. Therefore, we should no longer incline to the belief that there are no differences between the organic and the conventional products and that the consumption of organic products is a matter of enhancement of our health. The organic fruits and vegetables contain 40% more antioxidants than the conventional products, as a result, they protect our body against any serious infections.

CERTIFICATION OF THE ORGANIC PRODUCTS

The credibility of the organic products is based on an strict control system and on the guarantee of the law 2092/92 and 1804/99 of the European Union, and every organic food producer is obliged to adhere to this law. According to this system, a producer is controlled in each and every stage of the production until the time of its distribution. The agriculturists check the land, while special analysis, during the cultivation, the harvest and the standardization, certify that the rules are abide n by. For a product to be labeled as organic, it has to be the outcome of organic cultivation for at least three years and it also needs to bear the necessary label on the package, namely, the name of the company and the code of its standardization. It goes without saying that the use of genetically modified substances are forbidden in the organic cultivation.
